This move could result in the creation of a 13-hospital network, combining Garnet's three hospitals with Montefiore's ten, pending regulatory approvals.

Proposed Affiliation Details

The nonprofits aim to finalize definitive agreements by the end of this year, with Garnet Health joining the larger Montefiore Health System. This strategic move is designed to create "a stronger, more sustainable healthcare network" for the communities served by both organizations.

Virginia Rizzo, board chair of Garnet Health, emphasized the potential benefits of the affiliation: "Our affiliation with Montefiore Health System will only help to strengthen that commitment by expanding access to high-quality, exceptional care close to home."

Financial Context and Motivations

The proposed affiliation comes at a crucial time for Garnet Health, which has faced recent financial challenges. In June, the organization announced a restructuring that affected 42 employees and led to the scaling back of certain outpatient services. Jonathan Schiller, Garnet's President and CEO, cited "diminishing federal reimbursement and cuts impacting Garnet Health's current and projected financial sustainability" as factors behind these decisions.

Further underscoring Garnet's financial struggles, S&P Global lowered its rating on bonds issued for Garnet Health's hospitals in September 2024, giving a negative outlook based on multiple years of operating losses and a "very weak balance sheet."
